Tis why I think its A intermittent fault with the coil, you say its not sparking, but its turning over?

When the starter is just clicking it implies that the battery hasn't got enough juice to turn it over properly, if it wasn't earthed it wouldn't even do that.

You know the starter works as when its jumped it works.

So my things to check would be:

The Coil
Starter Solenoid

If the engine is earthing through the heater control cable it won't be able to draw enough power to turn the starter motor!

The coil will have no effect on the car turning over or no being able to urn over.

It could be the starter, sometimes a faulty start will not work when hot.

An easy way to check is the net time it fails to turn over, whip it out o the car and bench test it. if it works, then its not the starter.

As said previously, check all of your earth leads and make sure your battery terminals are tight.

Hope you get it sorted.

right folks here an update, so far i have replaced my alternator, my battery earth, my starter motor and my battery, and car was fine today however on my way home i switched everything on to try it when i got home so i could organize a lift to work and when i went to start it after i switched everything off it would even manage to turn over, but what i was thinking is ive fitted halogen headlights recently and i remember having a bit of trouble with power after i fitted them and now the car is used alot more at nights and with more things on. so im thinking my alternator is too small and not giving out enough juice?
