Hi all,

I got a 998 with a stage 1 kit and a HIF 38 carb.

Problem is when I start it up it smokes a hell of a lot and revs very high.

When I removed the plugs their all black and sooty.

I was running a standard carb till putting the HIF on yesterday and that was the same.

I've tried turning the mixture screw out and it just coughs and dies.

Could it be the needle?

Turning the screw out makes it richer, which will be ruining you eingine. You need to weeken it by screwing it in.

It could be the needle. Best bet s to take it to a mini freindly rolling road.

you screw the screw in to richen on a HIF carb. did the needle come with the kit? have you checked for air leaks? an air leak would mean you need tons more fuel to keep it running.

I don't think it's an air leak as I fitted all new gaskets unless it's the air filter causing probs?

I'll list all the needle's that have come with the car as i'm not sure which one came with the kit. I would like to try an AAA but they are sold out everywhere:(

Cheers for replies.

Needle fitted to car when I got is a AAU (it looks like its filed looking at the flat spots).

Found inside the car was a ADP.

And fitted in the HF carb was a BFY.

Any of these sound about right?

the AAU is the needle supplied with the stage 1 with the element filter. the AAA is the one for the cone filter. what filter have you got? if you can eliminate an air leak 100% then i would be asking the question about the carb. is the choke shutting off properly once warm? does the carb need a rebuild?

I've got a cone filter.

Anyway of testing for leaks to be really sure. All I can say is I've rebuilt it with new gaskets and ensured everything fits correctly before hand.

i think there is a way of spraying something whilst the engine is running on the suspected areas and the revs raise but someone else will have to explain how.

easy start if sprayed on the inlet and it sucking air will see a increase in revs, dont go made with it though just a quick squirt is plenty

Update!

Got out in the garage today and did a bit of research and found my HIF is a type 4 off a MGB!

I've got myself an AAA needle so the plan of attack now is to strip the old carb down, clean it, set float clearance and refit with AAA needle.

I did run the HIF with the AAA needle and that was very smokey with a very ott choke control (over reving). The exhaust was also spitting out loads of black gunk.

:ohno:

you could get a rough static set up if you and borrow a co2 tester,

but after that you NEED to get it set up properly on a rolling road, otherwise in time you will end up damaging something. and costing you more, its money well spent.

just twisting the mixture screw, this way or that without know if its too rich or too lean is like a needle in a hay stack, and at the end of the day it may not be the mixture which is the main cause of the problem

set up the fueling is always done once everything else has been checked and in good working order and set, tappets, spark plug gap, points, ( unless you have electric ignition, ) timming is about right. . then you start to set the mixture

you say you rebuilt the carb with gaskets, but does the butteryfly spindle have any movement, if it does it will be letting in air ( air leak) it will need rebushing.
and not worth trying to set it up untill this is fix, as your never get the car running right

Well I refitted standard carb after a good clean and fitting the AAA needle.

The good news is all is well again.

No smoke (apart from small amount on start up) and he purrs away.

I'm not doing a rolling road as I'm happy with set up.

Went for a trip up the road and found very hard to stop! (must remember no mot, insurance etc.)

Cheers for replies.

Sure the other carb isn't an HIF 44 ? Which needs a Bxx needle - so if you had an Axx needle in there - fuel would be pouring in.........

you beat me to it, a Hif38 Needle preceded with a A in a Hif 44 would with its bigger jet run rich as anything and produce the black smoke you describe, Picture of the Carb> did mgb's have Hif44s Didnt think they did??
