Went to put my SU back on last night after running my Weber for a couple of days, swapped from a BDL to BDK needle. Also took the float cover off for some reason, just to have a look really...

When I bolted it back on and tried to start the car, it floods VERY quickly, even when turning over at zero throttle - the plugs are soaking wet after 2-3 seconds!

I took the dashpot off to have a look - even 20-30 minutes after trying to start the car there was fuel pouring out of the jet and into the manifold - is this normal?

Went back out this morning and it looks like the float chamber is touching the body (it didn't before!) and it was dripping fuel out onto the road. Looks like it's coming from the the float cover.

a.) What have I done, and b.) How do I fix it?

First things first I need to sort my phantom clearance problem, but after that??

make sure the float is seated properly, theres a groove in it and a lib on the bady of the card, line it up before you start putting it in so you dont twist the pring, make sure the seat that the needle goes into is ok and check your needle float valve isnt worn

I think I may have dislodged something when I took the float cover off - I gave the float a good wobble because I didn't really know what it was. somethigns obviously come dislodged in there!

Make sure the needle valve has not dropped out of the cover or the pump will just be pouring fuel into the chamber and hence carb !!

By the way for clarification if your carb has a seperate side mounted float chamber then its got to be a HS4 and not a HIF as these have integrated float chambers !!! :w00t:

What you said about the needle valve sounds quite likely, as it seems like there is just an unrestricted flow of petrol through the main jet!

The next question is... where the hell did my needle valve get to???

If I can't find it, can I use a 175 needle valve from a kit for a Weber 45. Or am I just being silly now???

PS My carb is definately a HIFF44, the cover I'm talking about is described by Haynes manual for metro as "55.) Float chamber cover." It the cover right at the bottom of the carb.

BDL to a BDK is quite a drastic change, a BBW is in between the two if it doesnt work. (Thats after you have stopped it leaking and flodding etc...)

Check the Float clearance, bend the metal strip to alter it.

Yeah I noticed that the BDK was quite a lot thinner in profile too! It's what Somerford recommended for my stage of tune though and I trust them implicitly.

To be fair I think the car was chronically lean before, as it tended to pink like crazy on hard throttle...

I might just chuck the Weber back on but it's very "on/ off" in it's power delivery and impossible to drive moderately. It's not been set up yet, so I'm sure it can be improved...

Apologies yes it is a HIF44. Didn't realise you had removed the carb to take the cover from the bottom !!! :w00t:

Only way to be sure is to take it all apart again unfortunately !!!!

Yep, and I stripped a manifold stud in removing it too I think. Hope its just the stud and I've not stripped out the thread in the head!

Going to take the cop-out option and bolt up a spare HIF44 I have for now I think. Sort the other one out later.
