I did my apprenticship at the Swindon and Cowley plant (18 years ago :P), well worth going for (although Oxford would be my choice). You can always relocate, worth it in the long run

My husband started his apprenticeship 25 years ago this September with what was then Austin Rover at Cowley and has been there ever since. One of our sons is applying for an apprenticeship at MINI Plant Oxford this year, although I'm not raising my hopes as are they are very hard to get. The apprentices that are taken on now at Cowley/Oxford are of a higher caliber and with better interpersonal skills than of those taken on 25 years ago.

Just getting one at a BMW dealer is a task in its own, I had an interview at Sytner and they had 500 people on the cards...

Wish him good luck though!

Good luck to all who are trying to get mechanical, automotive engineering apprenticeships. God knows we need to keep these skills going. I was lucky to be an Austin Apprentice in Longbridge 45 years ago, absolutely fantastic start to my engineering and Mini career.
Noah you could get digs ( accommodation with a family) which is what we did. The companies will have a list of available accommodation. There would be plenty of new friends with like interests. Anyway best of luck.

I applied for an apprenticeship at BMW when I left school and when I got into the last stages that's when I was told they didn't need me, I was rather annoyed and upset 1, for not getting the apprentiship and secondly every other person in my group for the tests etc had a translated because they could either read and write but not talk or vice versa :-/

Ashley

Tanya I guess that's Kieron applying for BMW best of luck :-)

No, it's Dan. Kieran's busy with his Music course - apparently he's an excellent drummer. Great he's good at something, but why oh why does it have to be the drums! I do worry as I'm not sure how many 'excellent drummers' the world wants to pay for! Still Ashley, you did very well getting the apprenticeship that you got :-)

And Noah, you could get digs. In Jason's year there were a number (I guess around five or six out of 50 odd apprentices) in digs. One had come from Ireland, although I think he was 17 rather than 16.

I'll be 17 in August, I think I'll stick to smaller garages rather than manufacturing. I've applied for Mercedes and HR.Owen in St. Albans (Near Minispares) my friend lives opposite so I can always stay there.

I've applied for a higher apprenticeship with Jaguar Land Rover..Selection process sounds brutal though, if my application is successful, I'm not looking forward to the assessment center :S
