hi guys,

just wondered what peoples favoured method was on the underside of the car to look after it.

I was thinking of giving a good clean up removing all dirt and any surface rust,(which there is very little of on mine) :D

then covering it in a good anti rust paint i.e. hammerite

then covering it in waxoyl

is this good enough or are there better methods????

thanks in advance

steve

:D

I've done it in hammerite, its not the best and there surely better alternatives (stone chip etc..)

Clean and treat any surface corrosion. Etch prime then stone chip. Once hardened topcoat it then you can use a clear waxoyl or similar if you want to see the colour of the paint.

I use Gravitex
http://www.ebay.co.u...=item1e6365c1fb

It all depends on how much you spray on but if you are going for a light weight fast road / track weapon then i would just etch prime and then paint.

I used 4 containers on my son Project Erm

I've just completed some extensive repairs to the floor pans and sills of my Mini (new sills, all 4 floor pan quarters, heal board ends, etc). That left a mix of clean new panels and some areas (like the exhaust tunnel) still covered in WaxOil residue and patches of surface.
I cleaned the whole belly with Mineral Spirits (white spirits) then wiped down with acetone, rotary wire brush to remove any surface rust, the another clean with Spirits/acetone. I then used POR15 Metal Prep (keys the metal), then rinse it off and let dry, then two coats of POR15, then two coats of 3M 08883 Rubberized Undercoat (4 rattle cans). Lots of work but I think it'll be worth the effort.

FYI... I used that solution because its what I had lying around my garage, but have since found it's the current favoured DIY solution for many classic restorations and off-roaders here in the USA... so I guess it should be good for a Mini :)

Cheers,
Colin.

cheers for the advice guys i will look into some bits and decide as i'm going along :)

i'm starting with the rear fitting a rear beam so thought i may as well do this while i'm at it. and i'll probably make myself a carbon or glass battery box while i'm at it too :)
