I've just bought a used MPI fuel tank with all the bits attached, including the locking fuel cap with no key..... Is it a case of drilling and nibbling it away to get it off or would welding a blank key in there and forcing it round break the internals enough so I dont leave lots of metal swarf in the tank?

Me personally I would not drill it unless your taking the tank out and cleaning it out after, small bits of swarf with play havoc withe the fuel pump and the rest of the system. Get a big pair of slip joint water pump pliers and hold the outer cap body and tap a stout screwdriver blade in the key slot with a hex on the shaft for a spanner and twist. If you dont have that sort of screw driver use a mole on the std shaft. easy to do as the tumblers in the lock are only brass.

I dont think there are many fuel cap key combinations, depends how many spare keys you have! I have loads so nearly always find one that fits!!

Hmm, good point. I was at MOSS this week and asked for a blank for the door key, as my local key cutter did not have any, so I asked and they said, we dont have yours, but can give you a blank. Was a bit confused, then they told me they can get a copy of the exact key, if you have the origial key of course, ie its there in stock and does not need cutting.

Wander if they can do something with the petrol cap?

common thing back in the day. fs keys in most key cutters. they also on ebay still. u can search n buy a fs key if you know your number.

not sure about fuel caps though.

Possibly not, but why take the chance? Even scumbags learn somewhere and I would prefer it wasn't from me!

Yep, and they did search by FS number but were out of stock. Initially I thought what a security risk, but of course the authentication is that you have the original key and hopefully MOSS and others dont just hand them out!

Shame about the fuel cap, I used a nice alloy Monza locking one with carb setup, cost a fortune! Will need to stick with the standard one now, I hear the MPI neck is shorter and wont support a fancy fuel cap.
