Peter, I do realise all of that, I am not one of the muppets that insists on putting a 649 in their daily with a standard head and a 2.9 diff. However I am building a fast road engine for my second car so low down driveability is not such an issue. What I want is a quick small bore engine, and i don't mind if it is a little bit "cammy" low down. The 276 seems like a good compromise and a way to take advantage of the way that the 998 can easily rev smoothly. What do you think?

A 276 works OK in a 998 so long as the head work is done well and decent exhaust system is fitted. Twin HS2's would be ideal as well.
I did build a rally 998 with a 286 and twin HS2's, etc. It was a 1967 Cooper 998. It made 74 bhp at 6500 rpm (from memory). Ran with a SC CR gearbox and a 4.1:1 FDR and in its class it was quite good. However, we later fitted a 970 'S' lump with more top end.

I had the 276 in the 998, you need a short FD like 3.44 and it really pull only above 4k rpm. Mine was about 62 bhp with a single HIF44 carb.

R2D2, apologies for hijacking this thread, but has anyone on this forum tried the MD266 on a sensibly tuned 998, but using higher lift rockers?

Reason for asking is that the valve lift on the MD266 is actually quite low, not a lot more than the BMC standard cams. Made a big difference on my 1275 just going from standard A+ sintered rockers to something just over 1.3 ratio.
