hi all, the mini that i've just bought has got a bit of a noisy gearbox in 1st,2nd and 3rd......its ok in 4th gear, i know its a bearing noise but is it more likely to be the main double roller or the input bearing by the transfer gear?
the gearbox changes gear smoothly and doesen't crunch or jump out of gear at all.
the noise is only just about noticable but i can hear it, i had a mini ritz before with this problem but it was much much louder and lasted for ages until i finally replaced the engine with a 1275.

Is it not just the normal Mini gearbox whine you get anyway?

nah............its definetely bearing noise......its a deep tone.........not the high-ish pitch tone from the gear whine

Impossible to say really unless John (Guessworks) knows that one has a much higher failure rate than the other.....

In the lower gears the power goes through the laygear - so it may well be the layshaft and/or needle rollers. In 4th gear it's straight through drive - so no load on the laygear...
