years ago when i was younger (cough) you could get a moped/scooter at 16, insure it for a year or 2 then use that NCD against your first car, when you passed your test.

can you still do this?

only reason i ask is i have a 16yr old who wants to drive, and the insurance is pullin my pants down at £3500 if she passes her test at 17

im thinking, if this works i may save a bit

My mate is using his 2 years NCB, from one year on a moped and a second year on a 125.

I thought about buying something that was trash off ebay, like something that had been burnt out or something. And just paying the insurance for it without having to even ride it. a couple of hundred pounds for insurance over two years, and you could save loads on car insurance! My mate saved £2'500

Only a few insurance companies will accept full bike license NCB when insuring cars.

I just done a quick google and came up with this, it may help you at insurers to look at.

exactly what i was thinking, buy a moped, insure it, throw it in the garden shed.

i could only find two companies that did, one being churchill and the other i cant remember, churchill was 3000, and the other was 3000+.

rang up over 15 different companies and eventually found LV for 1200 fully comp for first year driving on my mini 30.

my renewal is due end of next month and cheapest ive had so far is 616quid fully comp with 1275 engine, roll cage and different wheels declared.

but i will be taking co-op instead for 1200 as it allows me to drive any vehicle under third party and can then use the range rover when dad is offshore.

co-op are the only ones left that will do that for under 25's

My insurance won't take it over but then again I am on a CBT and most likely won't be with them when my Mini is on the road, just a heads up though if you do do this start it up every now and then
