I am rebuilding my 1275 gt engine?...........A series block rebored to1360cc reground and balanced crank/flywheel...........mg metro big valve head / now unleaded.

Before I removed the engine the mg metro gearbox seamed fine, no crunches, selection problems or anything obvious to worry about. (Pic attached)

Here is my question without spending unnessesary money what would folks advise to replace as a matter of course? different people suggest different parts to be replaced........or should I just put it back as is and hope for the best?

Cheers

Darren

4 pin diff, 3.1 final drive or what ever one you want, central oil pick up and if you want straight cut gears and drop gears

I don't wish to change anything about the box.............I am happy with standard setup.............I would like to know what wear parts are likely to need changing.

If it has done high mileage then I would get a gearbox recon kit from minisport / minispares. If its an early GT then a remote kit and if it's a late GT then a rod change box kit. Generally consists of bearings, baulk rings, gaskets, seals etc

Lol..............this is my problem...........the more people I ask..........the more different opinions I get.......I want to do the minimum required for a safe bet?............this is an occasional use road car that does not get raced..........lets face it..........it's not difficult to drop the box out if I suspect problems when it's running.

Well you did ask for opinions on what to replace, rather than waiting until we can actually see whats inside the box.......

Trust me, that's not a criticism. I want as many opinions as possible. Then I can make an informed decision. :-)

Just have a word with guessworks on here. He'll strip, clean check and rebuild and replace worn parts. It all which is all you really need for a road car.

If the box hasn't been causing any problems and you haven't found any suspicious bits on your magnetic sump plug and there is no obvious play in any of the bearings (which you can check by hand if the box is off the block), then you can basically just clean it up and put it back in and hope for the best. If bits do show wear, that will usually be the bearings, baulk rings and in more advanced stages the bushings and shafts. One bit that tends to wear more than others are the drop gear bearings, so you may want to keep an eye out there too.

If you're on a budget and want to go for the minimum, you're fine as is, if you want to go the extra mile, get a gearbox recon kit and treat it to new bearings and baulk rings. Unless the gears show obvious and heavy signs of wear and/or you want to change to a different ratio, they should be fine to reuse.
