Hi, I got a 1978 mini 1000 automatic and I was wondering if there is any way to adjust anything inside the gearbox/sump so it can change at higher revs so it's able to get more out of the engine I am expecting everyone to say 'put a manual init' I do plan to next year as I want to get my no claims down first as I'm a new driver at 18.. Cheers!

i dont no much about auto gearboxes but id say try few engine mods to give better low end power and i m sure there will be some good suggestions for that on here instead of getting power from higher revs

Getting more power out the engine isnt a problem as im a mechanic and work with an engine builder I just wanted to know more about the auto of itself It's just I need the gearbox not to be for a granny! As that's what they drive and who I got the car off, would like to know if it could be adjusted to change at higher revs so I can put that engine to use... Wish it was a manual but it's such a mint car I fell for it after looking at other minis that were manual and just rotted right out and my budget wasn't high either.

I think the kick-down rod on tha back side of the engine, coming down from the carb, has some adjustment to it.
This will adjust the down shift/ up shift speed slightly I believe.
The auto is much more fun to shift manualy though !

Kickdown on the back of the engine. Loosen the locknut at the bottom and wind it down to adjust the change point highter.
If it's stuck you can bend the rod althoguh it's more trial and error.

Not sure about the 998 but my 1275 changes from 3rd to 4th on full throttle at 55mph ish.

If you don't want to tinker too much you get change the gears yourself manually 1-2-3-D and get better performance.

In my 998 auto. I fitted a stage one kit & got it rolling roaded. I usually drive around selecting the gears manually. This way it's just as rapid as a manual one.

There is a kick down mech but in fairness you don't need to adjust it really.

On mine if I pinned the throttle to the floor in drive it reves up very high before changing anyway

If you drive at full throttle then it will change when it has to rather then when it would normally, thus using the revs to the fullest, but actually changing the point at which it changes automatically under normal conditions ( not full throttle ) would need a change to the govenor inside the gearbox, not something which can be done easily as it would be a specialist job and require someone who has an intimate knowledge of how the AP auto transmission works.

If you want to use each gear to the 'max' then I would suggest using it in 1-2-3-4(D) as suggested above, however, also look after the unit, as over stressing it will cause it to break, and then you'll be in big trouble and looking at an expensive repair bill or replacing the unit.

The kick down is actually a "governor control" and it has a spring so hardly anything will be gained from adjusting this section, however in the box there are a few ways of improving the change points.
