Been having a few ideas.. I would like to try and rid the std number plate light...

Is it legal, and can it be done, to have the number plate illuminated fron the back? like a stain glassed window?

You get bolts which hold the number plate on with hi output LEDs mounted in them.

There is just enough output from them to light the full number plate

Look at a pic of the back end of Ade's. He's got them. Came from Demon Tweeks and cost about £30.

the thing I found with the majority of the "bolt lights" out there is that they shine straight out of the bolt rather than shine down on the plate. I'll have to have a look at Ades to see what he got (a search through 109 pages of project thread! Oh goody! :- ), but my school of thinking is that to have them shine straight out A: won't put enough light on the plate, and B: is a bit silly to have them pointing right at the car behind!

I got a link off one of these forums which had some which refelcted the light at right angles, and so you could fit a pair holding the plate on and diret the light where you wanted it. Link HERE!

There is also a company that is developing a semi-transparent plate, which is backlit (so completely "stealth"), but also reflective to keep plod and the DVLA happy. I'm not sure if they've announced it yet though, so I'll have to have a word before I put up any more info.

Look at the number plate illumiation units on rovers and montegos etc... they are small units which shine down ( or up as they are on the bumpers ) a mate has a couple on his and they are very neat indeed.

We found some at Demon Tweeks. Click on licence plate option in the menu...£40.73 a pair by the way! :- They are different to the ones pictured. Have fitted them to TC's Hatter and Jake. They are the same as on Ade's Bogey. They do a cheaper set with blue lights that are obviously illegal but you could modify them by changing the LED. The finish is not as good tho.

Whats your opinion of them Jake? Do they shine at the plate or away from it?

Theres two types of these "light bolts". Theres the ones that shine "out" from the bolt head, these are Maxy P territory, then theres the ones that shine "across" that illuminate the plate.

Try tracking down a copy of the latest Mooneyes catalogue, they are in there and if I remember correctly were under 30 notes!

You can do it far cheaper.. 2.60 a pair ??
1 pair angled led holders 22p each

led holder clicky

1 pair white 12v led's £1.08 each

LED's clicky

hook them up and your done.

Of course there is always the option of fitting them into the rear bumper
and pointing them at the number plate..

They look pretty cool (IMO) and shine across the whole plate because that is the way me and Clubman Katie carefully positioned them :-

I've got LEDs in mine but they're housed in a plate that we designed and had made locally, the top part folds over the top of the plate - oooh its too confusing to explain but i have no pics of it.

I didn't think the bolt light wotsits were MOTable?

As far as I am aware, the number plate must be illuminated at night and no light must shine backwards. The style of light therefore, is irrelevant and I am assuming that Ade's is MOT'd. We also had a club member with one of the first VTEC engine conversions in a clubby who had them and that was some years ago. He is a vehicle sparky and would have told me if they were illegal or MOT failable when he was helping me and Nick to fit them!

We have been looking in Maplins, internet, other options for a while to put some on TCs Hatter. At one time you had to make them or get them from the States. We used Trimph Dolomite ones in the end but they failed the MOT one year because some of the light shined backwards.
