i have a big crack in my footwell under the pedals, i can see the metal moving wen i rev, so im gunna have to weld a plate in to replace it, however the subframe will be in the way, wats the easiest and fastest way to remove the subframe, with engine and gearbox still attached.
and how can i stop this happening again

You can't patch weld there mate, too close to a suspension mounting. You need to make a proper repair which will need to be seam welded.
Taking the subframe out complete isn't hard and has been covered many times, try a search.
Sorry, just realised you said a plate to replace not a plate to cover.

i tried a search came up with 3 matches. none of them which really helped. surely id have to undo wires and how about the gearstick and the exhaust. u say its easy but there sounds like alot of things to disconnect

The gearstick drops to the floor if you remove the two nuts behind it holding the assembly to the car, there's no wires to remove really they just get taken off the engine and subframe and all stay on the car, the brakes need to be split and drained, the heater hoses need splitting, the exhaust needs seperating, all the control and speedo cables need splitting, the carb and inlet manifold need to come off. The body just lifts off the top and gets taken away like a wheel barrow. Simple.
In you case however you might find the best thing to do is leave it all inplace as you will need the subframe mount to be there to make sure you're welding the plate in the right position and alignment. If I were you I'd take out the engine and box, replace the rear frame mountings for solid ones for the welding process so that the alignment is as good as possible and then put it back together with new standard mountings.
