A few weeks ago I had an incident where my indicators stopped working. Turns out some of the covering had frayed of the cables and touched the body causing them to short out. Easy fix but tonight I started the mini and again had no indicators and this time no heater blower. I checked the fuses all good and then noticed when I moved the 5 pin plug from the stalk to the loom everything worked when I let go it stopped. So I thought loose connection easy fix but when I took the plug apart I saw the green and white connector side had melted a bit. See attached photo I assume this happened when the indicators broke a few weeks ago.
So my question is now where do I get a new moulded plug or can I just clean this one up?
Also on a side note when the indicators when a few weeks ago as a result of the frayed cable the fuse did not blow. I have led side repeaters so I think this is why what rating fuse should I use to make sure it blows if anything like this ever happens again.

Thanks

I don't know where to find one of these connectors. Generally, parts like that are specific to the car manufacturer and you can't buy them elsewhere, which is a real nuisance. If Rover still existed they would have expected you to buy a new loom. The practical solution is to cut it off and fit 5 seperate bullet connectors, or get a different type of 5 pin plug and socket from an auto electrical supplier. See here for example:

http://www.polevolt....Connectors.html

The 6 way connector looks useful for this.

Having said that, it is not impossible that someone here will have a connector, or know where to get one.

As to your fuse rating, having LEDs does not change the rating needed to protect the wiring. I suspect that the connector was not making good contact, and the high resistance did not allow sufficient current to pass to blow the fuse, while allowing a local hot spot to develop.

Thanks for the reply. I just realised its the ignition multi plug not the indicator stalk one so will just remove it and fit a new multi plug of a different shape.

Thankk you for the advice

It's a Ripaults 'Church Window' style connector. Common to a great many vehicles not just Leyland and still available from just about all auto electrical and kit car suppliers in a variety of sizes. All the connectors and terminals had part numbers in the BMC / Leyland / Rover 'fiche and could be ordered from parts desks as they can from most car manufacturers.

The guy at Minispares pointed me to http://autosparks.co.uk for connector plugs. I haven't actually got round to using them yet though...

It seems that I was wrong about availability of these, and Somerford have them all on their web site.
