Had kads big disc on my racer for years now, on the discs there are grooves ,mine have always faced forward, just surfing the web and found a photo of some on a bloke building race minis and he has his the other way around.
see link.

I've asked this before and the conclusion was it didn't matter....

And to confirm this I swaped mine around to try it.. They worked better for a few miles while they bedded in but are in reality no different...

the groves are meant to face outward.. but like the rest of the lads said above.. not much difference otherwise..

Yes there is a difference, the correct way and the grooves will gently slide across the face of the disc, the wrong way and they put extra strain on the disc and pad with a higher possibility of cracking said disc or chipping the pads, its easy to machine straight lines, its not so easy to machine curved lines its done for a reason.

A few years ago, we looked in to machining names instead of standard grooves into discs.... ie 1275 GT or wookey you name it we where asked, however the safetyimplications range far and wide....

The picture of the space framed Mini is correct, they should be sweeping and NOT scything across the face of the pad.

the grooves are also one way for cooling purposes so if they are the wrong way round then they wont be as efficient and you will loose braking performance especially when racing, wont be as noticeable on the road but still a factor

Ok thanks you guys lots of different opinions here, these were fitted opposite to to the photo by Green and White mini spares a few years back, I would have though they would certainly know which way to put them but ill get all the info from kad on Monday.

On saying this I have noticed the pads chipping away slightly but never really thought much of it!

Brakes work by energy conservation laws, the more material you have the more braking potential you have......

The grooves dont really improve cooling, the original Metro had vented discs which had curved vents, these increased airflow and yes allowed the discs to cool quicker

The grooves are there to remove the very thin layer of "cooked" pad material thus reducing the chances of fade.

Just to make this more confusing, if you have vented discs some have straight vents some have angled...

You are partially correct...

After 86 all discs fitted to metro's where vented and the vents where straight, this was a cost down exercise by Rover.

The Mk1 MG Turbo had curved vents they where handed for this very reason.

That's because its cheaper to produce straight grooves, we use CNC machines and for us its just a simple program, however if you machine the grooves on a conventional milling machine then its almost impossible.

Sorry I'm talking about the vents in the discs not the groves..

The vents are the section between the 2 friction faces of the disc, and so was I :-)

Grooves are on the friction face or surface
