A few years ago, we looked in to machining names instead of standard grooves into discs.... ie 1275 GT or wookey you name it we where asked, however the safetyimplications range far and wide....
The picture of the space framed Mini is correct, they should be sweeping and NOT scything across the face of the pad.

On saying this I have noticed the pads chipping away slightly but never really thought much of it!

The grooves dont really improve cooling, the original Metro had vented discs which had curved vents, these increased airflow and yes allowed the discs to cool quicker
The grooves are there to remove the very thin layer of "cooked" pad material thus reducing the chances of fade.

After 86 all discs fitted to metro's where vented and the vents where straight, this was a cost down exercise by Rover.
The Mk1 MG Turbo had curved vents they where handed for this very reason.

Just to make this more confusing, if you have vented discs some have straight vents some have angled...
That's because its cheaper to produce straight grooves, we use CNC machines and for us its just a simple program, however if you machine the grooves on a conventional milling machine then its almost impossible.

Sorry I'm talking about the vents in the discs not the groves..
The vents are the section between the 2 friction faces of the disc, and so was I
Grooves are on the friction face or surface
