I have a 81' and was under the impression it came with A engines and so i bought a pin drive oil pump for a replacement i need to put in. Now i am getting a little parinoid thinking i have a A+. So i guess my question is did 1981 minis come with A or A+ engines stock?

Spidey senses say A series.
Another check is the dissy retainer - should be a single bolt holding the forked bracket to the engine block if it's A+. You can also check your engine code against Guess-Works website:

My '81 Estate had an A+ engine - they chucked in the slightly more powerful A+ to replace the 1100 when that was phased out.

Was a bit hit or miss at that stage - whatever AR had about at the time - my 81 city came with an A+... as said the block ribs or dizzy clamp (forked clamp A+ , oval mount A) asre the easiest giveaways...
