Hi guys,

Currently half way through painting the car and now have a nice gloss finish on all the panels and now have got to a point where I can lacquer the car. Do I need to sand the paint down before applying lacquer? As in, do I need to rough it up so it sticks to it, or do I want as shiny surface as possibly before spraying the lacquer?

No need to sand down before applying lacquer, just refer to manifacturer reccomendations about dring time between paint coat and lacquer.
What do you mean by shiny surface? it doesnt have to be shiny, lacquer is for metallic paint and the likes..which are a bit dull before lacquering..if you're going to lacquer a solid color the paint will fade in very little time.

I've used aerosol gloss black on the roof, and gloss white everywhere else.

So is lacquer not needed on a solid colour?

If the paint is a base coat regardles of it being a metallic or solid colour it needs laquer.
all laquers should be sprayed on within a few hours of painting the base colour, if left to long you will need to repaint the base colour.

Thanks midridge2

The roof is currently painted with this:

And the rest of the body with this:

Will these require lacquering?

The gloss black is fine without the need for laquer, the polar white has no mention about it being a base coat but check the can.

The white is fine too. Only metallics from Halfords will need lacquer
