On Friday night last week I saw a police chase around where I live. The police were chasing a Renault Clio, if I remember correctly there was four police cars and 2 helicopters. In the end the car was shot it with an electric device to stop the electrics from working ( like what is used in fast and furious 1 near the start).

So it got me thinking do only classic cars not get effected by this device as they do not have an ecu?

I think it's actually the start of 2F2F :teehee:.

I'm curious about this too, the body is still used as an earth back to the battery. Could voltage going in to the body cause the ignition system to fail?

Oh sh*t yeah my bad.
I would have thought that it would cut out so would it not mean you would need something with out an electric ignition, or anything electric at all?
I mean I know you would need electrics for lights and wind screen wipers and so on.

Would still play with an ECU, so senders etc wouldn't work and injectors wouldnt work

Did you witness this chase from your rear view mirror by any chance?

The surely if this is used incorrectly it could damage parked or passing cars with no proof that the police are at fault?

I remember on top gear when richard hammond sat in a new (at the time) golf and it was put in a elec cage and 1,000,000 volts (or something like that) were passed through the bodywork and had no bearing on the car or driver. So what's all that about?

Sounds like a focused EMP device / gun

not nice if you have a pacemaker - but ok if you have an old Diesel

I think old cars will be ok as they are not as sensitive to induced currents in electrics

but new cars will be more likely to be affected electronically

only as good as the person aiming it , unfortunately

I think it only affects closed circuits - ie a running car -

but there are a few circuits that could be affected on a car with the engine off ?

hope they used it on a quiet motorway
