What is the fabric covered wire from the old condenser unit and is it important?

The wire the old condensor connected to would have gone to the - terminal of the old coil, now thats discarded and your wire marked - just goes to the coil in its place

It doesn't leave the distributor, I think it may be an earth

Your talking about the wire that went onto the condensor retaining screw yes its a earth wire between the movable base plate and the distributor body mine has it with my aldon igniter which is the same as your trigger just put it on the base plate screw and the small cutout screw in the distributor body.
