Basically I am looking to change my dash from the 3 clock type with speedo rev counter etc on to a centre speedo type and I wanted to know if I need a rev counter or not ? Or would you say it's worth having one anyway ? It's just an extra £100 I'd rather not spend but if I need to I will and where is the best place to get one ?

No there is no legal requirement for a rev counter, weather one was fitted from new or not. You are fine to go to the single 'big' center clock. Mini spares sell everything you need (as do others)

Could use the existing rev counter, put into its own individual housing / pod - nice and cost effective :)

Yes, and the beauty of this is that the rev counter was an 'add on' to join the two existing clocks, you'll see what I mean when you remove the instrument pod, the rev counter itself detaches from the other two clocks which are joined.
The Cooper 'S's from the sixties used the centre clock and many had a rev counter in its own pod to the right of the centre clock, think it'll look great.

As stated its not illegal but it should be and the needle should always be above 5000rpm for max grin factor.

I have a MiniSpares centre walnut dash, and have mounted the 80mm rev counter in the driver side fresh air vent, it fits quite well with a few turns of duck tape to take up the slack. I find it essential especially when running in new engine.
