It needs to be done by a machine shop, basically they machine out the valve seats in the iron head and insert a harder steel one.

What engine are we talking about Jack you have 998 in your user name so is it that size? Firefox a while back posted a list of engine numbers as below suitable to run unleaded.
99HF15, 99HF32, 99HG30, 99HG31, 99HG32, 99HG33, 99HG34, 99HG39, 99H/D81P, 99H/E20, 99H/E21, 99H/E22, 99H/F16.

Hi kernow, I'm running an MG 1275 engine bored to 1330, my first mini was a 998 :). I had seen a nice stage 3 head on the cheap but the only problem is that it's a leaded head, I've had a little delve into dome previous threads which covered the problems, think ill just get my current head worked on as it'll more than likely be cheaper than buying this new head and getting it converted to unleaded.

Par engines/head centre (or what ever they are called) did my last head for £50

i removed the head and gave it to them bare, they then fitted the hardened seats
