Once again my mini is having problems.
I recently put a refurbed engine into her. its a standard 998cc a series with kent high lift cam and standard everything else
Basically the problem im having is when i change gear unless i open the throttle fully it kinda judders and has no power for a few seconds and then kicks in.
The timing is set to 12 degrees and the valve clearance at .12. I was told that the clearance should be .14-.16 for the cam i have but would this cause a problem like this?
The carb was also changed. It is a Hs4 SU and i'm not sure how to set the mix correctly so again it could be this.
Any help to get her running smoother until i can get it on the rolling road would be marvelous.
Cheers se

I had this same problem and tried making it run richer and it made a massive difference. Also I was told by someone on here I was using the wrong dash pot piston by checking the number on top of the black screw lid...

Does the engine have any other mods? What sort of cam is it ? ie model 256/266/276 ? unless your thinking of fitting a modified head at a later date I cant see the cam performing very well, its obviously out on the carb mixture setting, have you set the idle mixture with the lifting pin or by CO meter? is the exhaust the std cast manifold with the carb attached ?
It may even need a different needle altogether, I would get it to a rolling road as your spec is not one someone can say use this needle to get you in the ball park.
Normally the cam is done and then other mods follow on like the head, inlet manifold and carb and a free flow exhaust, no matter what you do the head is going to hold you back from producing the cams best, maybe its just a mild road cam then?
