I noticed a squeaking and located to the front wheel jacked it up and the wheel was loose from the cv. I replaced it with a set of new roller bearing, spacer, seals packed it with grease and put all back together. The problem is I tightened the large nut holding the disc but the cv was still loose it had 2mm of play I have put a large washer over the cv to take up the slack but this is not right I have not lost any parts when dismantling I thought it was the wrong bearing but its an exact replica.

Any ideas out their

Joss, Are you losing the brake pedal? as in if you drive it a bit do you need to pump the pedal to brake?

Is there wear to the tapered/thrust washer?

I think Algordo1100 was making reference to the top and bottom ball joints of the front hub carrier/upright..is there any play in these?

In case you haven't got a manual here's the diagram of the front hub assembly:

Thank you for the diagram I have installed the new thrust washer but when I dismantled the bearings the oil seal spacer was not installed could this have been the demise of my front bearings?

Joss, the lack of spacer might well explain the need for you to add the washer the first time.

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

Some of the new bearings you get these days do not have a separate spacer anymore, one of the inner races is taller instead.

Did you tighten the assembly with a flat washer in place of the conical washer first to pull everything together? If not the conical washer could have clamped down early and left you with this play despite the castle nut being torqued up.

joss, the previous owner, replaced the front bearings. he told me that when he tightened the bearings up the wheels locked up solid. i told him that he had probably fu*ked the bearings and he should buy another set. when i first built the car i fitted a set of genuine rover bearings from our local dealer who had an old set in stock, and they came with spacers and tapered washers. im baffled as to why the spacer is missing, but it would explain the play in the hub.

have you fitted the rubber inserts to the front and rear scree rubbers yet? if not i would make it a priority as the screens don't take much to pop out :-0

Ed I'm confused and just to avoid the posters expense and danger can we clarify.

The spacer you speak of, do you mean the one that goes between the two inner races of the bearing?

If this is missing and the OP has tightened the castle nut to the specified torque the bearing is most likely scrap is it not?

Agreed ;-)

Yes I mean the spacer between the 2 races. I think when the previous owner swapped the bearings he had not fitted the spacer. So recommended that he buy new bearings along with the spacer and wedge shaped washer, and torque to the manufacturers spec. whether or not he done this I'm not sure.

I got a new set of bearings and a new tapered washer but when i dismantled the original bearings it was missing item 5 in the layout diagram I managed to get one and all went together swimmingly and works well (apart from that bloody grease). Thanks for the advice guys.

Oh I see, you had space between the CV and the rear oil seal?

Item 5 is the oil seal spacer it seems to be common that they get thrown out as they're not strictly needed. I put mine back in though just makes everything a much neater job in my opinion.

Glad you've got it all sorted.
