I was surprised about the requirement for a cage in a standard road car, as in the last 2-3 years I've certainly seen a bog standard Audi RS4 & Vauxhall Vectra doing the Epynt hillclimb, so maybe that's a fairly new rule...
If you want to see the full requirements, the 2013 MSA Blue Book (which governs most motorsport in the UK is on-line here;

The specific regs for hillclimb/sprints are here;
http://www.msauk.org..._Drag_Racing_(S).pdf
Most sprints seem to be between £90-100 to enter

Similar (ish) to a sprint but without the need for a cage, or a helmet. The cars have to be driven to the event (so no trailer fairies) and is a true 'road going' event.
Depending on who's running the event, you may need a competition licence, but you may just have to join the club running the event - this would be known as a clubman event (open to club members)
An autosolo would be a cheaper way to get into motorsport. Check out 'you tube' for videos to give you an idea of whats involved.

If you have a very early Mini, built pre 31-12-1961 you don't need a cage! After this, from what I understand in the MSA Blue Book, for road going production class you require as a minimum a basic rear cage - centre hoop & two backstays, one to each rear wheelarch. Seats can stay standard, but I think they'd need to be secured if they simply tip forward for access to the back - I think a scrutineer would take a dim view if they weren't! Seat belts - the rule says "Three point. One diagonal shoulder strap and one lap strap, with three anchorage points on the chassis/body shell or roll over bar of the vehicle on either side and to the rear of the driver’s seat." You have to wear approved race suit, helmet, gloves & boots.

There is no requirement for a cage in a road going car, it is merely recommended.

That's what I thought - but it's not how the Blue Book reads;
"10. All Sprint & Hill Climb vehicles must comply with
the following, as a minimum:
Safety
10.1.1. Roll-over Safety Bars K.1 to 1.2, except for cars
of Periods A – E (Nomenclature and Definitions).
10.1.2. Road-Going Series Production and Road-Going
Specialist Production, K.1.6.1 or K.1.6.2 recommended."
But I've now just re-read K.1.6.1 & K.1.6.2 for about the fifth time & I do think you're right! It was the conflict in wording between "All Sprint & Hill Climb vehicles must comply with the following, as a minimum:", then excepting Historics but only recommending (I thought) basic cages for road cars that got me! When I first read it I thought it stated that the minimum basic cages were needed for "All Sprint & Hill Climb vehicles..."
Apologies to the OP for any confusion I may have passed on....!! (but I'm glad to know that I wasn't dreaming having seen bog standard cars doing Epynt hillclimb...!!)
