hi all....i've just done a compression test on our 1993 mini italian job, now considering that there is 103,000 miles on the clock i'm wondering if the engine has had some work done to it in the past.
the readings were all exactly the same at 190psi across all of the cylinders (test done when the engine was hot)
the engine runs fantastically, it uses no oil whatsoever and the oil pressure is spot on.

i understand that the engines used in our car are the low compression 1275 units.....does that reading that i've got sound about right for one of these engines?

i have had a few mini 1275's and a couple of them were approaching the 100,000 mile mark......both of those engines were screaming out for a rebuild due to dropping compression, burning oil and rubbish oil pressure/knocking cranks etc, does anyone else think that this engine may have had a rebuild in the past as 103,000 miles seems a lot for a 1275 to be in such good order?

opinions please guys

cheers.

It sounds like its a healthy engine, it might have had a rebuild but sometimes it just comes down to luck, I've had to rebuild ,my 998 after 45,000 miles but then again, people get 80,000 without a problem so it seems to just be how lucky you are and how well the parts were made.

yeah, thats what i thought, but if this is a low compression engine would it read 190psi or doesen't it make any difference to the compression ratio, theres nothing in the cars service history to suggest that the engine has ever had any work on it, even the gearbox does not crunch or anything which is surprising considering the cars mileage.

Yes they are a lower compression engine at 9.4:1. Howwever as the engine has a very mild cam fitted very much less overlap lift than the cooper engine the cranking cmpression is held high.

Spot on readings.
