Hello.

I've got a 1989 mini flame.

Recently I've been having problems with my brake lights always being on.

If I lift the brake pedal a bit with my foot they go off so I'm assuming it's just that a switch somewhere is being pushed on when it shouldn't be.

Where is this switch located and is it adjustable at all?

Any pictures would be welcomed too.

Thanks :D

The pedal should rise to the top of its stroke when released, you would need to rectify this first.

How much can you lift the pedal from its stationary (released) position to the top of stroke ?

And near the pivot point you should find a white switch, if this is fixed ok then look elsewhere for the fault.

I can only lift it about 10-15mm?

Mine is fairly similar (1989 racing green), its not cause me a problem.
I think its because its a common spring for the clutch and break pedals

As above, there is a small white switch near the pivot point of the pedal, the pedal comes up and presses it to turn off the light.
There is a nut you can loosen to slide the switch forward a little (probs no more than 1 or 2 mm) to make sure the light goes off.

Hope this helps

I sounds as if your brake switch needs tightning up. The brake switch sits infront of the brake pedal, if you get your head down in the drivers footwell beneath the freash air duct pipe going to the heater you should see it connected to a bracket just infront of the brake pedal with two electrical speades coming from it, they vary in looks over the years but mine is a white plastic type.
When the brake pedal is up (relaxed) the action of the brake pedal pushes on the spring plunger (rather like a push button) braking the contact inside the switch, i.e open = no contact.
When you push on the brake the switch opens and connects the terminals in the switch making continuity in the circuit and thus your brake lights come on.
You should find on the head of the switch (opposide side of the electrical spades) a threaded nut, this needs to be tightened up, one of two ways to do this.
1.. Hold the switch steady and adjust the nut on the switch, or.....
2.. release the electrical tabs, hold the nut on the rear and screw the brake switch clockwise to tighten it onto the nut. You want to screw the unit back together just enough so the brake light illumintaes when you start to depress the pedal but brake lights 'obviously' go off when the pedal is returned.

Good luck!

I think your number 1 could be misleading..... use this method ONLY if the nut is loose, this method would not be useable and you may damage the switch if you use this method to adjust the switch.
