Hi,
Recently bought a 2nd hand ACR4 plus Rover3 pod to use on my MPi. The manuals are pretty useless and I am having some difficulty maintaining communication. Here is what I am doing:
Ignition off and alarm cancelled
Plug in the ACR
- It goes through self check ok then I follow this sequence:- select petrol - select MEMS2J - select Mini
- It seems to read back ECU type and says press OK to start diagnostics which I do.
- Then get menu to read fault codes etc - select read fault codes and it comes back and says no codes returned
At this point I am assuming comms with the ECU have been established and what little info there is in the manual would suggest this to be the case.
At this point I start the car and the ACR4 immediately reports that comms have been lost and to press OK to try to re-establish, which I try but to no avail.
So my Q is am I doing something wrong sequence wise and how do you keep the unit talking to the ECU when you start the engine?
Thanks for any advice
Jeff

It may be to do with the harness you are using. The MPi harness (30214000) is for all Rovers MPis except for the Mini which is a special case and communication is likely to fail. It will work with a little modification (joining two pins together but I would need to search a bit to find out which two). A more reliable harness is the 30212400 J1962 which has universal OBD application.
I do not think there is anything wrong with your sequence. if there are no faults then you should set the menu to components to see what all the readings are.

Hi,
Thanks for your reply. The harness I have is the 30214000 as this is the one that is shown as the right cable for the mini in the Sykes-P reference guide. It clearly shows this as being the harness for the mini mpi and I bought it separately from the pod so I hope it is usable. Anything else I can try - has anyone used this harness successfully?
Thanks

And a little bit more information here:
http://www.spsupport.com/index.php/kunena-forum/7-acr/2190-rover-mini-mpi-1998-a-acr4-problems
SP Diagnostics was a company set up from the buy-out of Sykes Pickavant's diagnostics business.
I have both 30214000 and 30212400 harnesses and I know the second is more reliable. The other harness referred to (30214600) is, I believe, an updated and more expensive version of 30212400.
