What would the affect of having a slightly smaller stub stack on the carb?
Thanks Jack

It would surely defeat the object of having it....

Stub stacks generally serve 2 purposes;

1 - A tuned length intake can allow for alteration in torque characteristics

2 - the smooth rounded lip of the stack allows a smoother air intake maintining a better velocity into the head.

A shorter one, will alter 1 but not necissarily 2 unless it is less well made. If it's better made the alteration in 1 may be well worth the improvement in 2.

Carb intake is 1.5 inches stub stack is 1.25 inches so your mechanically restricting the size of the original intake, not good restricting and altering the air flow into the inlet of the carb no matter what the component is, thats why they make stub stacks in different sizes

Saw those they look better made as they are machined and the others are sand cast by the look of it and rough finished and require some work

If you're referring to the turner carb ones don't bother unless you're prepared to cut it to fit inside your air filter. They're simply too big for mini filters.

Thats the ones he does say in his description they do fit inside cone filters, so you have had to modify one to fit inside the K&N Cone ?

He recently modified his ad as a result of my complaining. I called him and he assured me it would fit any filter bar the cheap cones with the cheap cones with a bridge inside. I have the ramair filter which is one the biggest there is and it won't fit.

I had mine cut down to fit inside. The cost of doing that would have made the med cheaper.

If you're handy with the grinder try the turner but otherwise spend the extra on the med. If you can get it to fit, it works great with the ramair. I got a an extra few BHP on the rollers over a cone/somerford stub combo.

^^^whether you're right I don't know but it's irrelevant to the fact that turner carbs stubs don't fit a cone/ram/itg despite the eBay ad and what they tell you on the phone.

If you're handy with the grinder

Grinding aluminium with a normal grinding wheel or disc is potentially very dangerous, as the aluminium clocks the wheel, then expands due to temperature and cracks the wheel, often resulting in an explosion of grindigng wheel etc..

Indeed, avoid grinding ally - you get chunks! :P

A medium grit flap wheel will cut through it pretty smoothly though, take pauses to let the temp drop.
