Well if you don't, you will drain it by pulling the seal out, although that might be a tad messy. Best to drain it first.

Were talking about the seal on the selector shaft where you drift the pin out in reverse on the rod change box? and remove the seal ? I have done several and the shaft if a good fit in its bushing and very little oil came out, I wiped out the recess and fitted the new seal and rubber outer boot ok without draining the oil. Am I thinking of a different seal here ? I dont recall any O ring? Or is this on the earlier remote type box?

Depends on the age of the gearbox, I think.
The earlier ones had just the seal holding the oil back, and leaked in short order.
Later on there was a small aluminium spacer with an o ring on it that slipped on the shaft first, then followed by the standard seal ant then the little rubber bellows.

Here are all of the bits.
I found that if you do it cold, then very little oil comes out if you are organised.

The aluminium ring holding the o-ring is a Mini Spares part, the standard equivalent fitted to later boxes is plastic. You might be lucky and be able to do this without draining the oil as above, if the selector bush is worn however you will loose oil.
