I'm trying to get the carb (HS4) off my Mini (1990 1000cc) for an overhaul. I've disconnected all the pipes as well as the cables etc. However, once the mounting bolts were removed, on trying to remove the unit from the car, the carb won't come all the way off - the jet head fouls the bulkhead and obviously won't come any further back (shown in picture below)
The other picture shows what looks to me like a three quarter inch spacer, between the carb and manifold - there looks to be the remnants of a gasket between the carb and this apparent spacer - am I right in thinking this is what it is? If so, it appears to have welded itself on with exhaust heat over the years. I've given it a few gentle knocks with a small hammer and punch but it won't separate up to now. Of course, if it wasn't for this extra near inch of metal, I'm sure the carb would fly off...
The only reason I could think of for a spacer being there, is to push the carb further back away from the exhaust manifold, to prevent fuel evaporation etc?

Thanks,
Matt
