Morning all,

A few weeks ago I had to be towed home and found that my clutch fluid had loads of air in it. Since then I have bled it and it was as good as new.

Two weeks later its starting to crunch again and the pedal isnt quite as firm as it was.

What is the first thing I should be checking? The slave cylinder?

Thanks in advance.

Check the whole system, slave, pipework and master. Look for fluid down the back of pedals too, master could be leaking

I had this issue last year and it got to the point where pulling up to lights I had to knock it out of gear and pump the pedal until it turned green and can pull away, was very amusing for people next to me at the lights

In my case it was the slave cyl leaking, was a right pain to change as its in an awkward place, but as said check for leaks as that will show where fluid is being displaced with air and letting it into the system :)

I have had to start again! I drove through a flood the other day, and when I came back to my car later the clutch was soft as anything so back to my tried and tested  pumping ;) weirdly its improved since so I am burying my head in the sand and assuming its fixed :P

A trick for checking the pressure in your master cylinder is to remove the pipe from the top, screw in the bleed nipple from your slave, depress clutch, with clutch held down slightly open nipple, then re tighten nipple, release pedal, and now when you press down on the clutch it should be solid. If not the rubber seals ain't doing their job (new rubbers) or the cylinder is pitted from rust (new master). Slaves are cheap and easy to replace so if the cylinder inside looks shot get a new one. To check the hose hold your finger over one end and submerge in water, blow from the other end and if there are air bubbles you need a new hose.
