Have a 1,000 cc mini K reg-Stood for a few years low mileage, changed tank checked fuel flow ok-changed hoses -plugs-points condenser coil and re aligned timing new air filter but still having the following problems with her.

Will fire up and can travel either 2 miles or 20 and she will just fade away-will then start up but just fades away again this can be done over and over again with the same problem.

She has been in 3 local garages who tinker get it ticking over and cars ok-not one of them have actually taken it out to experience the problem,i have had an auto electrician look at it and i have an inkling it is still an electrical problem ???

Any ideas from you learned mini men would be helpful or a good man in my area to sort her North Wales/Merseyside/Chester.

Many Thanks

Joe

When you say fade away rather than cuts out makes me think it could be fuel related, if your ok with cars have you removed the float chamber top to see if theres fuel in there,?unless you have a Hif carb in which case it means removing and stripping if no fuel and the needle valve is not got some form of dirt partly blocking it then its time to see if the fuel pump is supplying fuel. Its also possibly one of the rubberised fuel hoses from tank to pump and pump to carb due to age has stated to collaspe internally and not allowing fuel through, I'd be checking those items next with the symptom was fading away and not cutting out.

Have you noticed the coil getting very hot at all? It may be overheating.

I had a similarish problem with mine just last night. it ran ok when going along but would cut out if you stopped or went to near idle. Would always restart even bump starting if still moving. Turned out to be piston sticking in carb. Doesn't sound to be exactly what you getting but could be worth a look.

You say you replaced the hoses ? did you replace the hose from the tank to the pipe from the boot to just under the boot floor ?

He's a thought! it doesn't have a non vented fuel cap on the tank does it? like a mpi/spi one? could be a vacuum if so causing no fuel supply.

Thats an easy fix Dave, how would you tell or better still test for a none vented cap ?

When it fades away pull over then remove the fuel cap and see if you get a inrush of air would be my test, I have seen this before and its a big gulp and the caps a bit tight then woosh, or a temp twist in cap like the ones in fuel stations and road test.

Just out of interest the more fuel is in the tank the shorter distance it goes as less space above the fuel level to compress and cause a vacuum, The Mini tank is quite strong and not subject to collapse under the vacuum.
