I have just purchased myself a full setup of 7.5" disc brakes. My car originally had drums in front. It is a 1970 model 998cc with the single line system. Naturally my car still has its original master cylinder and thus no servo. Basically, my question is, would it be alright to run the disc setup on the original master cylinder [with a full rebuild] or would be it better to upgrade to the Cooper S spec master cylinder?

The 7.5 set up was designed to use a servo. The S cars had them and the GTs had them. I'd use a servo:P

I'd love to use a servo, only problem is, I'm in South Africa. The setup I got is very scarce here, making the servo like hen's teeth. So would it be advisable to upgrade to the 'S' master cylinder?

Ahh but what if you want to keep it looking standard though. I have been recommended on here that if you are not using a servo to go for the Cooper S master cylinder AD.

But it would still be possible to use the standard master cylinder, or would you want that extra capacity?

Go for the bigger cylinder as the original drum master is not really man enough i have been told.

I'll keep a look out for one here then. I just don't know how easy it will be to find one.

Oh yes I see, that's a straight bolt in then. As an interim until funds permit or if I manage to find one in SA, would the standard one be alright? Or should I rather spend some money?

I have had 7.5 discs with a servo and without. The servo was the original GT servo with an original (refurbished) drum-brake master cylinder. The brakes were not very good.

My next set-up were on a yellow tag Master with no servo, braided hoses and EBC blackstuff pads with grooved discs. This was the best braking set up I've had on a Mini. So, disc brake Master with no servo = amazing in my book.

Not sure how well your brakes will work with the small cylinder.

Ok, so then the "S" cylinder it is then. Any suggestions in terms of good combinations of pads and discs? I was thinking Green Stuff?

I'm not sure, but I seem to remember that if going to 'S' discs and 'S' master cylinder, you might need a different pressure relief valve for the rear brakes.

With regard to pads, it depends on how hard you will be driving. Standard 'S' pads are quite good so long as they are original spec. EBC Green are good for road driving and for competition the Carbon-Metallic pads as supplied by Mini Spares are absolutely fantastic.
