ayup all!

i have just bought an old corsa from one of my neighbours, it was his daughters car but she is now selling it as she cant afford to drive. she has owned the car for a few years now so i know its not knicked or anything.

the problem is she cant find the logbook, (she has got the new keepers supliment though) am i right in thinking that if she sends for the logbook there is no charge, but if i do there will be?

its been ages since i have had to sort this particular problem out so cant really remember now. the only bugger is i cant sell it on now until i get the v5 for it, sadly he neglected to tell me this until i had already paid up for it

I thought the £25 fee was only waived if a new owner has the new keepers supplement, but hasn't actually ever received a new V5 because the previous owner hasn't sent it to the DVLA. I didn't therefore think it applied if a full V5 has already been issued in the new keepers name.

I think you would have to pay for one, unless you have the new keepers bit and the royal mail lost her copy after it was posted to the dvla. Although technically SHE should pay for it.

What they said.

Which new keepers supplement have they got? Is it the one from when they bought it or is it the one from the current V5?

If it's from the current V5 and it's blank then fill your details in and you should be able to send for a new one as if they have sent it off and you've never had the replacement.

If it's from when they bought it (and therefore from the previous V5 then don't do anything with it because if they never registered it in their name you might find that DVLA think it's been yours for several years and come chasing you for tax or similar.

I'd definitely be seeing if I could get them to stump up for the replacement V5. Play dumb and tell them that they need to apply for the replacement so they can then send it off with your details on.

How does that work?.... I thought a replacement document was £25 if you had lost it and that it was only free if you never actually received one in the first place??

Don't know if it would work, but could she apply for a change of address to Cradleys house, then change the owner when the new one comes through.

send the green slip away with a v65 and you'll get v5 back in your name.

Be careful which green slip it is!

If she sends for a replacement because she's lost it then she'll have to pay £25. If you send for a replacement because you've never received one after sending off the V5 that was in her name then it's free because they should have issued one anyway and either it's been lost in the post or equally likely it's got lost at DVLA (their internal systems are a shambles).

If that green slip that they have is from when she bought it and you send it off asking for a new document then they are likely to start asking questions. They can tell that it's not from the most recent V5. They might assume the car has been yours for the several years that she has owned it and you might become liable for any fines or offences attached to the car during that time. They might assume you are trying to do something dodgy and start involving plod. Or they might just issue a new V5. With DVLA you never can tell - half the time it depends in just which incompetent happens to handle your bit of paper.

Of course you could just play dumb and say that it was given to you by the previous owner and try to push any fallout back their way.

As above I think we need some clarification as to which green slip we are talking about here.

I assumed that as she had lost the v5 prior to the sale, she would have therefore lost the current green slip along with it, (as you don't acttually tend to detach it from the main v5 until the point of sale). So presumably the green slip in question here will be the one that she got herself, when she bought the car originally, and not the one from the current logbook. If so, then it's no longer valid and as I understand it will also be pretty useless to either of you, as it could only have ever been used to obtain the copy of the V5 that has already been issued and has now been lost.
