Hi all,
I have put the attached document together to help diagnose the no spark situation that many seem to suffer from.
I am no expert so it may not be 100% accurate or use the correct terminology. I would therefore welcome any feedback or suggested corrections.
The coil pack used in the document comes from a running mini.

edit: the tachometer relies on a signal sent from the coil, logic would say that a faulty coil may affect the tach reading.

not at all, I'm still learning myself.
I just thought the no spark situation seems to be quite common and that its bound to happen to me at some point, so a bit of research, reading and playing was in order.

Rob Mac, I diagnosed mine with this guide, the numbers read different from what are specified. If my issue is the coil I'll post the ohm ranges. The bottom two cyl 1 & 4 were different from 2 & 3. and the pins were different.

sorry guys but I made an error with the figures for the resistance values on my guide.
the correct values are 0.41 to 0.61.
I have ammended the guide, the old one has been deleted, the attached document above is now correct.

Hello Ive just done this coil pack test on my mini and the results  are 7.38 for the top two pins and then bottom two pins are 12.67. i assume the coil pack is faulty? and could this be the cause of the car not cranking at all when i turn the key?

the reading is out of spec, but don't bin it just yet, your problem of not cranking when you turn the key will not be solved with a new coil pack. a faulty coil pack would not prevent the engine from cranking, it wont fire up but it would crank over
is the immobiliser working ok?

Yeah its a brand new battery and been charged haha :D .Yeah the imobiliser light turns on and off fine last weekend connected a battery directly onto the starter motor which made the engine crank but wouldnt fire so im thinking it could be the solenoid and coil pack are playing up ?

Yeah that's it by the wiper motor. When you turn on the ignition does the fuel pump prime?
I think its unlikely, not impossible though, for both the coil pack and the solenoid to fail at the same time

Yeah the fuel pump primes once the keys turned and then you just get a click from the relay box
