i have a 88 austin with 998 engine
the problem is that when i drive the car and i step on the accelerator it starts to gag ! (dead spots) but these doest have when i go slow or when i dont spet to much on the gas.

here are two videos i dont know if they help

one is the sound of the engine i dont know if its a misfire ? (exhaust sound)

the other one is too see if you can hear from inside the car while the gaging happens

Have you checked firstly for water in distributor?

If not it sounds like some sort of fueling issue.

Have you carried out a basic engine? Points/ Condenser Timing and tappets, hard to see in the video but appears the tacho is dropping when it falters indicating its a ignition symptom.

Yes set the new points to 15thou, making sure you wipe the faces of the new points before fitting to clean of any oil on the faces and put a new condenser in the same time. and then check the timing.

To check and set the timing accurately you would need a timing light and according to the engine/distributer fitted you set the timing at the correct rpm with the vac pipe disconnected

1978-on 998cc is 8degs BTDC at 1000 rpm with the vacuum pipe disconnected, (blank vac pipe to ensure smooth idle)
