Once the ignition components have been checked and confirmed they are ok, plugs and points you've done get the timing checked and do the valve clearances, now you have to start to look at the fuel system,

Does the fuel pump deliver the right quantity of fuel or is the pump faulty, do you have the breather choked in the tank causing a vacuum? is the slide in the carb operating correctly, lift up and does it fall back with out jamming? is there oil in the carb damper, do you have dirt in the fuel causing a blockage in the carb? Its a process of fault finding and working your way through it all.

With it running squirt some WD40 around the inlet manifold gasket and the gaskets on the carb, does it rev up indicating a air leak on the gasket?

Depends if you have the mechanical knowledge to remove the carb if its a HIF Type? or a HS its easier to look in the float bowl for dirt.

There will always be a limit with out the basic skills to diagnose faults, do you have any mates in the Motor Trade who could help you out?

What you have to remember is that the symptom you have could be caused by a number of faults and you cant just pick one out and say thats caused by this or that, its a process of elimination unless the problem is staring you in the face like the carb is loose and hanging off and sucking air.

Have a run through the above and see what that turns up
