I cannot explain why replacing the temp sender should make the fuel gauge start working. Regardless, I'm glad you got it sorted out and thank you for posting an update of what you found and did!

The only way I can think is that there was a loose connection on the fuel sender, and taking the wires off and putting them back on has improved the connection!
