If i unplugged the top hose and flushed it towards the head would this be a good way of doing it? I know i would have to take out my thermostat.

I used to work at a Vauxhall main deal and there we had a Wynns Radiator flush machine, and we always back flushed from the cars normal water flow around the block as it helps dislodge settled rust and other stuff in the coolant.

I am a little confused, when you say the cars normal water flow and around the block what exactly do you mean? You hook it up through the radiator and goes through the top hose?

The water flow on the mini comes out the top hose so back flush it with the water in the top hose and it will dislodge a bit more that way

Tried to flush it doing it that way and still showing the same thing. i did notice when i looked inside the head from where the thermostat is it looks pretty rusty inside. Could this rust be causing a problem?

Your going to see a rusty surface inside its cast iron and running just plain water, better to use a inhibiter in the coolant some antifreeze are a all in one, if its flushed out now the water should come clear, dont forget the heater matrix set the heater to hot to open the tap.

+1, when you are happy it is sorted you must put antifreeze to stop corrosion.

Ok i will put antifreeze in once i sort the problem out. But it seems like i am never going to figure this out. Any one have any new ideas? As i said before, my fan belt is pretty loud. Is it possible it went bad and is not turning the pump and radiator fast enough? If i was running to rich would it make it overheat?

Running rich won't generate as much heat as running lean would. Did you flush continuously until the water came through clean? If the fan belt is squealing then no it almost certainly isn't turning the pump properly. Is there anything that isn't wrong with this engine?

Yes, i flushed it until it was clean. And the engine is running fine. I will try and switch the fan belt and see if that has any effect.
