hi really want to do away with the plastic mk4 dash switches and replace them with mk1 items , i will be welding a panel into the elongated hole in the mk4 dash to make for a smooth panel , at the same time il be removing the brake switch,on the dash and the rear heated screen switch as im using a rear perspex window, the mk1 switches would be for lights and wipers only at the moment , anyone done this mod on here b4 thanks

Easy:

step 1) remove everything in the area i.e switch panel, dash rails ect..
step 2) Weld a sheet of metal in the switch hole to create a blank canvas to work from.
step 3) cut out to size & buy these parts: http://www.minisport...fo_14E3386.html http://www.minisport...fo_14A7172.html
step 4) re-fit up the choke & heater control then deal with the electrical jargen as you wish (not my area of knowledge electrics haha)

*thumbs up*

You should be aware that as of last Wednesday the brake test switch is an MOT item. You can make a suitable replacement from any warning lamp and a toggle type test switch that will blend in.

You can make a hazard type toggle switch from a 4-pole changeover toggle switch.

Bridge the 4 commons together, fit the two indicator supply cables to any 2 terminals on one side and the four other cables (one of which is for a warning lamp that will need to be added somewhere) to the 4 terminals on the other side. Works exactly the same way as the original. I've posted about it many times.

Different people like different things though, some people want the all toggle switch look which was why I came up with that arrangement for someone years ago. Personally I think all the classic round push button or small rocker hazard switches look ghastly. If you want them though you can still get them new, including that little conversion bracket thing that includes the hazard flasher along with a round headed push button with a crinkly edged lens.

The first post I ever made here in fact was a complete list of all the toggle switches needed to replace the late Mini rockers (Delta I think the range is called) with specific switches to avoid needing loads of relays to do the job.

Didn't know that Dan. What if your car didn't have one?

If it didn't have one when it was made then it'll be fine, I'm not sure what year the brake warning lamp became a requirement but that will be the same for the MOT as it was for Construction and Use Regulations. If you mean that the car didn't have one when you got it because the previous owner removed it then I would suggest you will have to refit one.

It's amazing what you can learn here, the info about the new MOT came from Samsfern the other day.

Thanks Dan. My mini did have one but was removed by previous owner to make room for a front fog switch (but there are no front fogs now)

I had better look into this, my MoT is next month.

You might have saved me a retest, so thank you. :)

Cheers

Ian

I haven't actually seen the new requirements written down anywhere as I'm not a tester and they are too new to be in the public domain, so check with one of our members who is a tester exactly what the brake warning lamp is tested for.

i wont be using my usual mot station as when i left my old imprezza for an mot they didnt consult me before fitting a foglamp, new front discs and pads , i was shocked when they handed me a bill for over 400 quid , they said it needed new items to pass the mot il be taking my mini to a descent garage if that exists nowadays and will be there waiting while he does the mot , fail or not no garage will be working on it
