Hi,

As the title says really! It says I do about 10-15 miles for every one I cover! The thing is just spinning constantly upwards. I was trying to work out my fuel economy but realised it was hopeless when on a 7 ish mile journey my mileometer said I had done 80 miles! Any ideas what could be causing this?

Cheers!

Is your speedo just as inaccurate? If not it's a pretty major internal failure by the sound of it.

speedo works fine. By internal failure I guess you are referring to the milometer, not the car itself. It may have just started, I have never paid attention to it before, Although if it has done it all its life then my car has only done around 10000 miles! I wish.

Did the odometer work properly before now? Is this a sudden change and was there any service work of any type (no matter how seemingly unrelated) undertaken recently?

The odometer wheels are driven by gearing and a pawl mechanism (like inside a ratchet wrench). It is hard to imagine a scenario that would allow the odometer mechanism to run "fast". Most of the time they slip or bind and do not work at all.

If this is a new development, the speedometer has remained accurate, and no service work has been carried out on the car recently, it does sound like a drive component inside the gauge has failed and it needs professional inspection and service.
