I can't comment on how much stronger the box is but I run a metro turbo box and It runs lovely, I think they come with a different diff to a standard box.

At the time the Turbo Metro was released then yes, the cases where stronger, however these attributes were standardised for later model variants.
The feature that didn't get carried across was the input bearing, this being a larger bearing that could support more load, however this is really only applicable to the transfer case and not really the gearbox.

is there a way to tell if a box is a earlier box or not?

The difference is the number of screws which secure the double roller C shaped retainer to the case. As with A series cases, early A+ cases use 4. This was later reduced to 3, deleting one hole as fractures in the case were starting there, hence the turbo box was the first "3 bolt A+ case" and the modification was made standard across all A+ cases.

Standard Turbo box was fitted with a 3.2 ratio final drive, larger 1st motion nose bearing, otherwise the same as any later A+ box.
