Hi,
I have a '95 Cooper SPi, 42,000 miles, excellent condition. Its got a K&N, new dpm exhaust and bigger minilite wheels, but apart from that its pretty much standard. Pipes, electrics are all checked and seem good, no oil leaks, head is fine..
The car starts and runs pretty well, a bit of soot out of the DPM pipes, but apart from that its sound.
It revs quickly and cleanly to about 4000, then it wont really rev any higher - it sounds like the engine is screaming with no more power to be had..
I dont have any reference to compare it to - but is this normal? Should a standard car rev higher?
thanks in advance..

In all gears...

The twin DTM could way too big and sapping power, i'd start by checking the temp sensor and the lambda anyway theres a fuelling problem

Have you done a compression test? Do you have an oil pressure gauge?
If you have a standard oil pressure warning light switch, then it only lights at 5psi which is crazy low. When it hits that 4k rev limit, do you feel a lot of vibration? It could be a spun bearing or the likes. That is exactly what mine felt like. It would not rev past 5k. Just hit a wall. Turned out the center crank bearing was totally screwed and it took out the rest of my motor.
Long story short, if down the road you find this is the problem, PLEASE have the line-bore checked. I didnt and it cost me a brand new crank and bearings:-(

Also check that when you floor the throttle, you are actually getting full throttle at the throttle body. Could simply be a slipped throttle cable.

Unplug the Lambda sensor and see if it runs better. If it does, your sensor is on the way out or you have an air leak into the exhaust that is being detected by the sensor. This results in a rich mixture and sooty exhaust. Mine was leaking at the gasket between the exhaust manifold and the down pipe right next to the sensor. Now the exhaust color is lighter and the car revs quicker past 4000 RPM.

i have exactly the situation mentioned by Orac69.
I have a 1993 jap import mini SPI with 22k miles on the clock in very good condition.
So far i have :
Oil and Filter
replaced lambda sensor
all vac pipes
taken ecu out - heated and cleaned the map sensor
new dizzy cap and rotor
new spark plugs
new leads
new earth strap, engine and battery.
injector cleaner
new fuel pump
new fuel filter
new pipes going to the purge canister
new servo pipes and seal
new battery
new alloy radiator with new screw type fan switch.
ive ordered and yet to fit:
water temp sensor, but the gauge behaves as normal.
the air temp sensors seem mega money to get a new one but it looks like i might have to.
i also checked tappets were at 12 thou.
i need to check dizzy timing is still ok...
im getting a little desperate.
have i missed something?
