i dont think you can work it like that.

From memory, dont you have to use a feeler gauge to work out the clicks then you can set the rest using that amount of clicks. That takes into account the wear on your rockers which may be different to someone elses car.

If you try to adjust for the rocker pad wear you will end up burning out a valve. also what IS a click adjust ?

A Gunsons tool for adjusting tappets. Essentially it's a large bladed screwdriver that ratchets through the middle of a socket. The ratchet has a large number of teeth so there is a very small movement per click of the ratchet and apparently you can use the clicks to calibrate the size of the gap. Never used it myself.

I knew that, but I was pointing out that to the OP that just because they do, doesn't mean that everyone else does.. I've never owned or operated one, Gunson don't tend to make things that don't work to some reasonable degree. Although I would not use one as there is too much at stake and I prefer the direct approach with a positive dimension.

Just use a feeler gauge to set tappets to 12 thou with the rule of 9.

They were popular back in the 1970s and claimed to be able to set tappets with worn rockers where the feeler gauge gave a false reading by sliding between the valve stem and the rocker pad where the wear was. Kind of a work around rather than attend to the problem in my mind. If there not worn use a feeler gauge like jaydee said, or fit new rockers if they have lost there hardness otherwise they will be noisy again in a short while anyway.

Yes, the point where gunsons fail, is indeed that when rockers are worn, all rocker pads are worn and cant see how you can find the correct adjustment with that system. The cure for worn pads is to replace them, especially if the poor sinthered type.

Not in all cases the hardness is enough for a regrind, much like your camshaft or crankshaft is, they are easily resurfaced with the correct machinery :-) and cheap too ;-)

Although tricky to operate (usually takes a couple of goes to get he hang of it) they work well enough and do compensate for small amounts of wear in the rocker pads.

You will need to calibrate on your own car as set down in the instructions though - any number of clicks suggested would just be a SWAG.

Compensating for pad wear is very bad thing not good ! as the rocker moves about it can crack open the valve thus burning it out :-(
