where can i buy some sheet metal for welding? I live in the cambridgshire area

Depending on how much you need, it may be worth seeing if a local fabricator has some offcuts they could sell.

A local weld/fab will be far cheaper than a steel merchant. Even if they whack some beer money on top then it will be half the price of the steel merchant.

You could try 'Fenweld Limited' in St. Ives. They are on the industrial estate on the left going North on the B1040 towards Somersham.

Try eBay. When I lived in the UK I used eBay for small-ish (10" x 18") sheets of steel quite a few times. Just search for 'sheet mild steel'.

My local steel stockholders sells offcuts on cash sales for a couple of quid. Their 'off cuts' can be up to 2m x1m. It is in a skip so I guess they weigh it in otherwise. They have a proper offcut rack but that seems to be for bar and section only.
