Can anyone describe/ show me a picture of where the engine earths? I've been to a friends today and noticed I don't have one, I've looked at decent places for it but would be better to put it in its intended place. I have always wondered why it always struggles to start, it must be earthing via something else to start. Any help on where to locate it would be much appreciated :)

Several places it could be depending on Model/Year

Across the stabliser bar on the bulkhead RHS
RHS inner wing front to clutch housing below starter.
To name a couple of places,

Fit one across the stabliser bar bolts if your unsure where yours is, if you really have none then the most likely path to earth is the Choke and Throttle Cables

Sorry it's a 1989 shell and metro engine.

So basically, anywhere from engine to body?

Could I run one from the starter motor to the subframe?

Starter to Inner wing as subframe is rubber mounted, easy job on the stabliser bar above the clutch just take out the 2 5/16 bolts (1/2 inch spanner size) and put a earth strap there 10min job.

Be careful though if the bolts in the block are siezed lubricate well don't twist them off.

1989 model will have (or should) a pedal box mounted servo, sometimes this and the breather (only if a 1275 has been fitted) can be a pain to work around in which case remove the breather (if fitted) and plug the hole, as any nuts, bolts, tools, mechanics etc will damage the gearbox :-(

The engine steady (dog bone) is the best place for it, although modern automotive electrical engineers would cry :-(

The modern way for electrics is to NOT use secondary fixings, ie a bolt is holding a bracket onto the engine (Primary fixing) then a battery ground cable is fitted (secondary fixing) if the bolt works loose the ground cable loses it's functionality, and as KernowCoooper says your choke cable would then be your ground cable, the choke is NOT up to carrying the current and will get hot creating yet more damage and work / expense.

Possibly a fire, I certainly would NOT rule it out.
