Hi Guys,
I have a 97 Jap Rover mini but it is SPI. What would be the best code reader to purchase for it?
It does have an OBD connector under the dash but i am unsure if one of those $50 ebay code readers would work.

Its best to try one before you buy. I have a cheap orange coloured one from Ebay which said it would work on my Ford but it does not. It will log in but cannot read the fault codes even though it says there is one fault.

I have posted your question over at Specialist Mini Forum in the fuel injected section.

The only UK Mini with an OPD connector is the MPi but that is as far as it goes with OPD compatibility. None of the standardised code readers will work with it. The SPi had an earlier connector type. It appears from what you say the Japanese SPi contemporary of the UK MPi had the same OPD connector but it is very unlikely that the cheap code readers will work with it.
The best option is the Sykes Pickavant ACR4 (or ACR2) with a Rover v3 pod and a universal OPD harness. These appear on eBay regularly.

Try and track down a Sykes ACR on ebay. The 4 line ones are "old hat" now but with the correct rover module will do anything on a Mini. You do need the correct module and interface cable. The ISO cable works on an MPI but I'm not sure about the SPI as I never looked at that in detail. With a bit of homework you could get some pukka kit for reasonable money.

As Rick says you need to do the research to ensure you get the correct sykes stuff, if you get the wrong part it just will not work. I can give you the details for an mpi but you need to check it is suitable for an spi.

For an mpi -
sykes ACR4 30255400
Rover 3 pod model 30350800
cable 30212400

Its in the boot of the car so if he is going to the suffolk, hamoc or thistle runs he is welcome to give me a nudge and we can give it a go.

Yes. I agree with this. What I called the universal OPD harness is correctly coded as 30212400.
AC4 is four line. AC2 is two line. The Rover v4 pod should also work and can also reset airbag errors but is generally harder to find.

Another reply from Rustbucket162

Look what I found on the miniclan forum...

Item Title:
Sykes Pickavant ACR Rover/ MG Pod 30350800 Spi & Mpi

Item Description:
This is a pod for the Sykes Pickavant ACR 4 system which covers the SPi ( inc Coopers) and Mpi as well as many Rover, Land Rover and MG cars. Can set the stepper motor on Spi models and engine tune non cat Spi models including CO and idle speed.
Pod only you will need a SP handheld unit and suitable leads. Part number 30350800 also known as Rover 3.

and..

An update on this. I have sold the one in the picture but have another one but no printed leaflet (I can print out a PDF of it thought )
It can be used with Spi and Mpi minis and does everything except the airbag on late Mpis ( you need V4 for this).
The official Rover lead is for Mpi cars is 30214000 but the universal 30212400 or later 30214600 works better as Rover didn't always wire the connector with the correct earths! This lead is also needed for some Japanese import Spi models as although the aren't using the MEMS 2J some use the OBD connector (16 pin type).
For Spi you need the white three pin connector lead 30211600.

You will need a Sykes Pickavant ACR or ACR 4 to use it and a lead

Looks like he has a pod for sale which is half of the battle anyway. Here's the link to their site.. http://www.miniclan....ntpage&Itemid=1

Only pods up to V3 will work with ACR2 (2 line blue model) for the later V4 (30353200) and V5 (30358500) you must have the later ACR4 (4 line). Not sure the earliest models (grey ACR ) work with V3 certainly they work with Rover (1) pod which is what you need for SPi with 3 pin lead.
