The majority are 4 speed, there are some 5 and 6 speed gear boxes in existence but very rare.

Some late Rover Mini Mpis were 5 speeds. Think they were called Sport 5's or something like that. I believe the gearbox used internals from a maxi too

You know, even without a gear knob, you could have moved the lever to see if there was a fifth gear.

But just as well you didn't look for it last August or September or October or December or in January or February or March, because today is the best day to look for a fifth gear!

The Cooper Sport 5 was a conversion pack from John Cooper Garages, not a Rover product. There are no factory 5 speed cars. The gearbox used in the Sport 5 was from Jack Knight and is all bespoke stuff, aside from some of the original gearset. Even the casing was specially cast. There are no Maxi parts in it. The 5 and 6 speed boxes from Jack Knight are now available again, and Mini Spares also offer a 5 speed. Kad make one too but it is only available as a straight cut dog box.

the 5th gear was only ever produced on the 1st of April each year, and it was a second reverse gear

Was that so that you could back away from jokers twice as fast? ;)
