I have been wondering with the point system that the DVLA uses to determine if the vehicle retains its original reg number. Now with the alterations with the inner wings, different subframe and different suspension from original how are people keeping the original reg as the car will not get the 5 points from the body?

I would like to do a B16 conversion but am reluctant to fall foul of the law.

I would imagine most people are burying their heads in the sand hoping not to get found out as I dont think you can remove the inner wings along with all the other mods and keep the original reg,

but I dont see why its such an issue doing the conversion with it in mind that it will be Q plated when its done? the Q plate does mean the car needs an IVA but once it has that plate you are pretty much free to do anything to the car and it wont need any other testing other than the usual MOT and telling the DVLA about the changes, also means you can get insured on specialist kit car insurance which would be a lot more friendly to non standard mods due to there not being a standard for kit cars

You may not see an issue putting a mini through the IVA, but the problem is putting a mini which was designed 50 plus years ago through modern regulations, it can and has been done but it's a considerable job to do.

However once it's done then you have no problems with the DVLA or whoever

Here is a list of requirements a ZCars had to do to get it through an IVA

It doesn't have to be Q reg, it could be registered as brand new, if you can afford it, new shell, etc

Oh well scrap this idea. I can't be hassled with all the IVA stuff and actually building the car before hand. I think I will stick with trying to find a 1275 and going mental with it.

Dont give up that easy...... Hopefully people who have done such radical conversions will be able to tell you what they have done/had to do.

Cheers

Most people just get a signed letter from a garage mentioning the new engine size etc and send it off with the V5. Usually it comes back with the engine size all updated!!

What I am reluctant to do is remove the inner wings and loose the 5 points for the chassis and then be on a 'Q' plate. I dont think any engine converted car will actually be able to keep its original reg due to the change of engine, gearbox, suspension and the chassis mods.
