Hi people...after getting the mini on road for the first time today, I noticed a grinding in the engine bay when driving, closest sound to what would be an old steam train on the tracks, chug-chug-chug. However when Dipping the clutch, the sound stops. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.

Not much to go on as you haven't listed what engine/year it is, but when idling is it missing at all ? It could be a lot of things though, have you done the usual Plugs/Points (Unless Electronic) Timing, Tappets, Set the Mixture.

Come back with some more information as to if previous to going on the road it was ok or something you've put together.

This is with the car at rest in neutral?

Holding down the clutch removes the drive from the bit of the gears that's always engaged (even in neutral) notably the transfer gears on a Mini. It's normal for them to make some noise, we'd have to hear it to say if yours is normal, you might get an idea from one of the many online videos. Another possibility is the clutch release bearing if it isn't quite disengaging with the clutch released, more likely with a pre verto clutch.

Sorry it's a 1984 Austin 998cc and only does the noise when driving. It is electronic ignition but does need timing. Apart from that, tappets have been done with feeler gauges and has been making the noise since we bought the car 5 months but been parked on driveway most of the time so couldn't really investigate.
